SFA go Back to the Future as they crack down on Flying The Flag

Back in the early fifties the SFA almost brought Scottish football to its knees when they tried to ban the Irish tri-colour from flying above the enclosure at Celtic Park.

Crowd trouble at a Glasgow derby had put the football authorities under pressure with one possible solution being to ban the flying of a flag of green, white and orange for a member of the United Nations.

Acknowledging and celebrating the founder fathers of their club, Celtic stood firm against the ban before the SFA realised that this was no bluff and called off the ban. Less than a decade earlier Belfast Celtic were lost to the game, no-one could have anticipated Celtic chairman Bob Kelly backing down on a matter of principle.

As the football authorities prepare for Sunday’s Glasgow Derby they seem to be going down a very puzzling path.

After banning a Tifo proposed by the Green Brigade they appear to be seeking some sort of confrontation over the Irish tricolour, 70 years on from a previous, ill-judged challenge.

Social media provides instant access to news, whoever is having an issue with a flag should realise that later this year the SFA will be hosting Ireland in the Nations League on September 23 at Hampden.

I have a memory when a certain team’s supporters all wore orange tops,in support of Dick Advocat,Aye Right.at Hampden.

  • Finbar muldoon says:

Why does hampden have red, white and blue seats? Where does red appear in the scottish flag? Get hunners and hunners of Irish tricolours in there on Sunday. HH

  • Tyrone9 says:

Banners relating to child abuse at Ibrox was a breach of the peace offence.(99% sure) Why Celtic, Police Scotland and government turn a blind eye to them again is nauseating. Yet it appears they’re planning the same for Sunday.

I m sure they’ve had many instances of CA AND covered it up . The media also seem to enjoy reporting it ..not one jot of concern for victims.

Celtic fans are kettled thro life….huns are escorted.

Repeat… they’re planning to breach the peace on Sunday.

    • Jim says:

After giving it more thought if we are to fly the flags let’s mix it up with Saltires and Tricolors. That would be a sight to behold. Let’s drop the war stuff though.

  • Johnny Green says:

I think one flag per person is pretty reasonable to be honest, just how many would you want to hold up at any one time? Your conclusions are down right hysterical in this context.

  • Jack says:

“This will include 1 flag per person as well as size and material restrictions.”

No part of this suggests the Irish flag is banned. Honestly this looks pathetic

  • Sean McGinley says:

A couple of questions to Jock, Johnny Green and anyone else who thinks it is ok. Why are they doing this at all, restricting peoples freedom again like the nanny state ? Is it because they won’t tackle the obscenities of the hun and yet again try to tar Celtic supporters with their own, orange state putrid brush, as a response to last weeks ipox displays ? rather than tackle their own state sponsored anti-Irish racist, backwater views and behaviours ??? This “is” a racist war on Irish people and has been for 8 centuries, with horrific consequences intermittently, throughout that time.

    • Johnny Green says:

I have no problem with flying the flag, but as I did say surely one per person is more than enough. That would mean a sea of tricolours in my eyes, there is no perceived ban on it. It was the Tifo demo that was refused by the SFA and until I know what that actually said I cannot comment on it. Was it something controversial, why have the GB not explained it’s content?

      • Sean McGinley says:

The content is only relevant if it implies or states harm to someone. Otherwise its free speech/freedom of expression and sometimes, even though we don’t agree with the sentiments, we have to accept it. However, the SFA are imposing a ban on freedom of expression.

  • james says:

why does acting like huns seem to appeal to some Celtic supporters?, get a grip!.

    • Sean McGinley says:

…..a grip on the reality…this decision is political, Not about football. When Brit society is crumbling, they employ the divide and rule policy. …and I reckon it’s only going to get worse with the problems of leaving Europe.

  • Stephen McAdam says:

This ” war: comment will now be used to justify that no doubt chaos the poison will cause like as police scotland know! They all always do the stats are there on victims assaults for well over 50 years! These sectarian, racist cretins need no reason to act as they do! What’s disgusts me and all Celtic fans is that they orcs can do as they like and be given a pass under the old bs ” o f ” and then casual people believe or it’s more comfortable to! Our club need to sort this once and for all! On the tricolour no one nothing wrong with it appart from it offends the posion like the colour green does and this the ” old boys” sfa relenting to der hun complaining and no doubt many within the organisation own ideology! The word ” war” will be used to beat us with no doubt whereas 2 weeks ago we saw the vile hoardes of mordor do their usual no minority either utter hate throughout with missiles from every corner ,assaults on our staff ,waiting back to target all our players at the corner where we were and,the ” hold me back: from that coward pretending he was going come on the pitch! Who dare we score eh This wee country has a real anti Irish/ Catholic problem that could been fixed decades ago but in reality the enablers throughout all authorities in brigadoon Scotland like it this way! As most are from the poisonous background! This ain’t our issue its theirs! I lived in Sydney for years and aussie Cektic fans would comment why cant people in scotlanf be allowed their Irish heritage in the way even 2,3 or 4 generation Irish,Spanish, english, scotish Eric are in Australia! There can only be one reason it’s not the idiots its people in places of power that enable the bigots! Its that simple, we know how this place works it’s almost as if the cretins of ibrox feel justified attacking anyone in a green tshirt! That’s the problem and always has been! Fly the flags with pride and be safe fellow Tims

  • Stephen McAdam says:

    Scotish etc i meant

  • Jack says:

Brilliant don’t let the bastards grind us down these people should not have the authority the have got spl should stand up to them more it’s us the supporters should have a say after all they why hampden that money should help all team they spent a fortune on a stadium that is not fit for normal supporters just so they can give them selve a place spent more on SFA offices than on playing or viewing Spain has no stadium they share it to give supporters a chance to get to games we have two top stadia in glasgow Murray field in Edinburgh for small friends can hibs hearts Pittodrie they have not earned the right to run scottish football should be people that know how to organise these avents not old priks same as house of Lords waist a money

  • Johnny Green says:

Any one who thinks there is an Irish Tricolour ban is off their paranoid heids!

  • Tony Conlin says:

Oh they will ban the Irish tricolour but they will do nothing about the Rabid sectarianism blatantly displayed by the defunct club and the Newco and of course the Orange Lodge, if they were or had been as diligent in the investigation into Bottlegate at the Bigot Dome last week as they have been regarding this, neutrals would be maybe on their side but they haven’t instead they’ve been passing the buck by not sanctioning Sevco as they surely would have done had that been Celtic will they ban flags and scarves etc with the Red hand if Ulster at the Sevco end eh no they won’t the SFA are a disgrace and an affront to every non sectarian in the country

  • Stev says:

This mob aren’t fit to run a piss up 8n a brewery. Want decent title race but no title decider now it’s one flag each. Great at trying to sell our game. Time for a vote of no confidence……

  • Brian says:

Oh incidentally this is the SFA that lawwell said was doing a good job. My fecking god. And some people still think lawwell was good for us. Snake.

  • Jim says:

No one is saying that they are not all corrupt, racist bigots, but you have to box clever, not play into their hands, and pick the battles of your choosing, not theirs, through manipulation. Everyone taking flags is great, but to talk about going to war, and comparing it to 1952 is ludicrous.

  • Allaboutceltic says:

Will be interesting to see if it only applies to Celtic. Could it be that they’re scared of Celtic & their tri-colour because they’re hun cnuts, or is it because they know that *the Raijurs are absolutely shite at them?

    HAIL HAIL
    KEEP THE FAITH??
