£45m plus- new Bassey valuation is revealed

Taking a well deserved breather away from the terrors of Watergate, Derek Clark has gone a step further than many of his media colleague by raising the price tag on Calvin Bassey to £45m plus.

It seems that more than a week ploughing through tales of bears forced to dine off raw sewerage has got through to the star man at the Rangers Review.

Pulling in an offer of £10m for an accident prone 22-year-old that has started 31 SPFL matches over two seasons would be a fantastic piece of business but as ever the shadow of Celtic haunts every thought inside Ibrox.

Since Kieran Tierney is also a left sided defender a price tag of at least £25m has been applied to Bassey.

Apparently English clubs are forever throwing silly money around even though that doesn’t bear scrutiny. Players within the top five leagues, with 100 or more league appearances will tend to cost £15-20m for starters.

After helping Leeds United to promotion, playing all 46 Championship matches followed by 36 out of 38 in the EPL Arsenal paid Brighton £50m last summer for central defender Ben White.

Three years ago Manchester United paid Crystal Palace £50m for Aaron Wan-Bissaka after similar playing experience.

With the heatbreak of Celtic’s title success and guaranteed Champions League football doubled up with Watergate, Ramseygate and Frankfurtgate the Bassey Fantasy gives bears a much needed distraction through the summer months.

Next week Connor Goldson, Steve Davis, Leon Balogun and Allan McGregor are out of contract, in  June 2023 Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo, Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack and Filip Helander will be out of contract.
