Going into the League Cup Final in December David Turnbull had already racked up 24 appearances for Celtic as well as a couple of games for Scotland.

The midfielder was an essential part of Ange Postecoglou, linking up the midfield and wide play and coming up with a healthy goal return including a hat-trick against St Mirren as the hoops gave an early glimpse of their capabilities.

At Hampden on December 19 the Hamstring curse struck Turnbull, earlier that month Jota, Albian Ajeti and Kyogo Furuhashi had pulled up with that tell-tale sign.

It was the start of three months on the sidelines before he returned as a substitute in the 4-0 win over Ross County.

A month later he has been restricted to five appearances off the bench but speaking to the Daily Record Turnbull is looking on the bright side of his three month absence:

I’m feeling good and it could have helped me in the long run. Maybe not at the time but I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.

One problem for Turnbull is that during the January window Matt O’Riley, Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi were brought in to bolster the Celtic midfield.

Turnbull, like the trio mentioned above, faces a tough battle to get back into the side but with two matches a week from the start of August until the break for the World Cup Finals in late November, Postecoglou will be delving deep into his squad to compete on all fronts.
