A year ago Tony Ralston was looking elsewhere to see what might be on offer, there was little sign that Celtic would be picking up on the 12 month option on his contract.

Under Neil Lennon and John Kenedy it was fair to say that opportunities were limited for the Academy bhoy that had been sent out on loan to Dundee United and St Johnstone after early progress under Brendan Rodgers stalled.

Ralston made just one appearance last season, a man-of-the-match display at home to Livingston with Gavin Strachan in charge as 15 first team players watched from home, self isolating.

The final insult came when Jeremie Frimpong was sold to Bayer Leverkusen at the end of January, rather than see what Ralston was made of Lennon turned to Jonjoe Kenny on loan in one of the most disastrous moves of a season to forget.

In pre-season Lee O’Connor and Osaze Urhoghide were given time to impress at right-back but Ange Postecoglou saw something in Ralston, trusted his instinct and suddenly right-back wasn’t the problem position that it had seemed.

Josip Juranovic was signed, nudged Ralston slightly to the side but there has been no fall off in quality whenever the back-up has been called in.

Last night he delivered the cross for Giorgos Giakoumakis to open the scoring from, soon afterwards he was making a very timely interception. Joe Hart certainly appreciated his team-mate!
