Nir Bitton appears to have no Plan B lined up following his Celtic departure.

The midfielder had a contract running until May 2023 but on Friday it was announced that he would be leaving after the final SPFL match of the season, at home to Motherwell.

When Celtic renew contracts there tends to be a 12 month option for both parties, in this case it seems that the player has decided to leave without having another club lined up.

Bitton told Israeli site Mako:

Right now I’m a free agent, it’s time to have fun with family and kids, work on the body and break away from football a bit. We’ll see what happens in the summer. When I arrived in Scotland the desire was to put a stake in the top leagues in Europe, there are all sorts of factors along the way that caused such a transition not to take place, but I’m not sorry for a moment.

Injuries have been an issue for Bitton in recent seasons but at the age of 30, as a current internationalist with his Celtic experience he won’t be short of offers.

The arrivals in January of Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley and Yosuke Ideguchi signalled that change was coming at Celtic with Bitton and Tom Rogic moving on.

As well as the January signings Ange Postecoglou has Callum McGregor, David Turnbull and James McCarthy to call on for his midfield places.
