Calvin Bassey is being tipped for an Erling Haaland type move to Germany.

Two years ago the striker moved from RB Salzburg to Borussia Dortmund in a £20m move, next month he joins Manchester City in a £70m deal.

Over the last week Daily Record readers have learned how Bassey-mania has swept the United States on the back of two defeats for Nigeria followed by Sergio Porrini tipping the former Leicester starlet for a move to Italy.

Strangely, all of the transfer speculation has originated from Scotland with hee-haw from elsewhere.

Listening in to Stephen Craigen discuss Bassey on Go Radio, the Record reports:

If someone is willing to come in and pay £25million, that’s what he is worth.

Looking at Calvin Bassey and his performances, particularly against Dortmund and Leipzig, I would be very surprised if there wasn’t German clubs looking at him.

The German market is strong and they don’t mind spending £18-£20million on a younger player.

You think even about Erling Haaland when he came in, Dortmund are a club that are willing to spend that thinking they can get the £50-£60million when they sell them on.

His performances against Dortmund and Leipzig will have opened the eyes of German clubs, who will think ‘can we pinch him? Can we bring him in?’

He doesn’t want to go to a club and not play. I just wonder if there is a stepping stone somewhere else before he goes to the English Premier League. The link is natural with Steven Gerrard, and he was sensational over the last few months of the season.

Gerrard resisted the temptation to swoop for Bassey during the January transfer window having largely left him out of the side during his time at Ibrox.

Bassey is one of the lowest paid players in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad with the deal he got from Leicester in 2020 dwarfed by the contracts given to Kemar Roofe, John Lundstram and Connor Goldson.
