Following his storming displays for Nigeria in the defeats from Mexico and Ecuador Calvin Bassey is being tipped for Serie A glory.

There is no let-up in the hype over the former Leicester City starlet who has started 31 SPFL Premiership matches in the last two seasons.

Bassey only became a regular starter after Borna Barisic had a nightmare in the February Glasgow derby but it seems that some impressive running in the last month of the season has put him in the spotlight as the next massive transfer export from Ibrox.

Alfredo Morelos knows the drill from nine failed transfer windows while Ryan Kent, Glen Kamara, James Tavernier and Ianis Hagi have been in the spotlight only to discover no sign of bids once the transfer window opens.

Speaking to the Daily Record, former Rangers defender Sergio Porrini explained:

I am not surprised that Aston Villa and other top clubs are looking at him. I know there has been Serie A interest and a lot of teams will be wanting to sign him this summer.

Any club who has the budget will be trying to get him because he is a top, young defender who will only get better. The good thing for Rangers is that he is still under contract and if they are to sell him it would take a lot of money to get him.

There has been no suggestion from Villa sources of interest in Bassey which seems based solely on being signed by Steven Gerrard in 2020.

Bassey is two years into the four year contract that he signed when moving to Ibrox which is believed to be worth around £5,000 per week. Last week Connor Goldson joined Kemar Roofe and John Lundstram on the highest wages at the club.
