Another pre-season fixture has been confirmed with Celtic playing Rapid Vienna on Saturday July 9.

Two matches are expected during the Austrian training camp but the club has kept quiet on the details with home friendlies against Blackburn Rovers (July 16) and Norwich City (July 23). A match is scheduled for July 6 in Austria.

Celtic will also face Banik Ostrava and Legia Warsaw but the match with Rapid will bring back bitter memories for fans of a certain age who witnessed the Cup Winners Cup saga on 1984.

The SLFC Austria website reveals:

For one week the Celtic F.C. attends a training camp in Austria. The team from Glasgow plays a friendly match against SK Rapid Wien on the 9th of July in the Allianz Stadium Vienna.

After winning the tie outright UEFA ordered a replay of the second leg to be played more than 150 miles from Celtic Park, Davie Hay’s side lost 1-0 with trouble at Old Trafford resulting in the first tie of the following season being played behind closed doors. Celtic lost to Atletico Madrid, effectively costing the club two European campaigns.

That will all be put into the past when Ange Postecoglou takes his squad to Austria as they gear up for a very busy schedule that includes six Champions League group matches between September 6 and November 2.
