Liam Scales has joined Aberdeen on a season long loan.

The defender joined Celtic from Shamrock Rovers in August last year and made the last of his 14 appearances in the defeat away to Bodo Glimt in February.

When Scales didn’t make the nine players on the bench for the Scottish Cup semi-final in April it looked ominous with Tony Ralston finishing the match at left-back with Stephen Welsh on the right.

Celtic have been strongly linked with bringing in a new left-back in this transfer window with Scales not waiting around, taking part in pre season training under Jim Goodwin today

Talking to the club website, the Dons boss said:

I watched him very closely during his time at Shamrock Rovers, unfortunately I couldn’t get a deal done. Liam is 23-years-old and has already amassed nearly 200 appearances in senior football. He’s a strong character with a winning mentality, who will no doubt be a great addition to the squad.

He is coming in as a left sided centre half, which is the position I saw him play regularly for Shamrock Rovers, and the one we believe is his best position.

He is aggressive, mobile, very comfortable on the ball and he has all the qualities you would want in a modern-day centre back.

Scales is under contract with Celtic until May 2025 but will need to have an outstanding season at Aberdeen to put himself back in contention for a future at the hoops.

Turning 24 in August he needs to get a consistent run of games under his belt but seems to have found a manager with faith in him as Goodwin attempts to lift the Dons after they finished last season in a distant 10th place in the Premiership.
