Celtic have been credited with an interest in St Patrick’s Athletic winger Darragh Burns.

The 19-year-old is expected to be on the move during the transfer window with Celtic signing Liam Scales and Johnny Kenny from the League of Ireland over the last 12 months.

Burns would be table to play for Celtic’s B team in the Lowland although there is a restriction on non-Scots but with five substitutes allowed in the SPFL Premiership there could be openings at first team level.

The Irish Independent reports:

Shamrock Rovers are waiting in the wings to pounce if St Patrick’s Athletic winger Darragh Burns does not agree a move to the UK in the summer transfer window.

The Saints have knocked back bids for the talented player who has graduated to Jim Crawford’s Ireland U-21 squad.

Hibs and Celtic were keen over the winter, and a number of English clubs are tracking the exciting talent with Brighton – who keep a firm eye on the Irish market – understood to be amongst that contingent.

The strongest interest at this stage is believed to be from a League One club which has made a fresh offer that failed to meet the Saints valuation.

The big problem for Celtic in a deal like this is finding a way to bridge the gap that develops potential into first team players.

Scales made 14 top team appearances last season but has moved out on loan to Aberdeen where he is more likely to get first team football in his preferred position of central defence.

Kenny had an impressive scoring record for Sligo Rovers before moving to Celtic in January, now the club must decide whether to give him time in the B side or put him out on loan to see if it can accelerate hi progress towards Ange Postecoglou’s first team.
