Formal approach this week- Celtic face strong competition for midfield target

Celtic face strong competition in their bid to sign Vinicius Souza from Lommel. 

A handful of ‘tier 2’ European sides are keen on the midfielder with PSV Eindhoven reported to have already made a formal approach. 

Souza has a strong pedigree with Lommel part of the City Football Group clubs can be fairly certain of his ability. Two years after leaving Flamengo for Belgian football he appears to have quickly adapted to a very different style of play. 

Bizarrely Souza was sent out on loan to a competitor club in Belgium but wearing the red and yellow of Mechelen he did enough to attract interest from some clubs with a big presence in Europe. 

It’s understood the player wants to play in Europe next season, but has some reservations about moving to the Scottish Premiership.

However, he is keen to take time to explore all his options.

Souza appears to be a very ambitious signing target for Celtic to go for, especially after signing three midfielders during the January transfer window. 

Playing mainly as a defensive midfielder his arrival could free Callum McGregor to play in a more advanced position, and also provide a bit more steel for European matches after Ange Postecoglou’s side lost 15 goals in six Europa League group matches last season. 

Celtic have converted Cameron Carter-Vickers from a loan to permanent contract.
