Dave King has issued a statement to The Herald after the Competition and Markets Authority named the Ibrox club for their involvement in a price-fixing cartel.

Elite Sports and JD Sports have admitted their guilt but in trademark fashion the Ibrox club are in complete denial with another pay day in line for a legal team somewhere.

King escaped jail in South Africa after paying fines to cover 84 breaches of tax legislation. At Ibrox his takeover breached the laws set down by the Takeover Panel while the club recently settled with Sports Direct for another broken contract.

In 2018 Mister King ditched the Sports Direct and Puma deals to set up a contract with Hummel which has led to the latest costly actions against the club formed by Charles Green in 2012.

Covering the issue Ibrox media partner The Herald reports:

“No,” King told Herald and Times Sport when asked if he believed Rangers would be found guilty of any wrongdoing. “I am 100 per cent certain that the Club was not complicit.”

Later on King ensures that any blame falls at the feet of his Managing Director:

I was absolutely not aware and, due to the Club’s prior embarrassments with retail, James Blair and I kept such a tight control over all commercial contracts that I don’t believe it was possible for Stewart (Robertson), or any other executive at the Club, to enter into such an arrangement without my knowledge.

The South African based businessman is still looking to sell his shares in the club.

Must be true then if Dave King says so…he’s no glib and shameless liar is he?

    Honest gov it wasn’t me.

I’m sure reassurances from a guy that’s so bent he could hide behind a corkscrew will be good enough for the CMA. Who have cited Rangers involvement in this transgression, albeit over a more limited timeframe.

Penalties for price fixing and anti-competitive collusion of this type can be set at up to 10% of annual global turnover (so total income, not the profits Sevco have never made).

JD have already set aside a £2m provision in their accounts to cover the cost of this – and they will get a far lighter penalty because they have co-operated with the CMA.

From what King is saying, though, Sevco haven’t admitted any involvement, haven’t co-operated and, instead, continue to deny any wrong doing, despite having been shopped to the CMA by the other parties involved. Leaving them at least potentially open to full punishment, depending on how deeply involved the CMA deems them to be (or whether they want to make an example of them, to deter bigger clubs).

Not the first time he has uttered those words “Not Guilty” and found to be proven otherwise.

  • Seppington says:

We believe you Dave, why wouldn’t we?. It’s not like you have shown yourself in the past to be anything other than a man of impeccable integrity and complete truthfulness. And it’s not like your klub(s) have a history of financial impropriety, is it? Nope, this must be another anti-gers witch-hunt by pro-Celtic media hacks, right?
