The Glasgow Times are reporting that Alexandro Bernabei arrived in Glasgow yesterday to put the finishing touches to his Celtic contract.

There is a difference between putting the finishing touches and signing a contract which can be explained by what looks like the defender’s final appearance for Lanus against Colon last Sunday when he was sent off.

A two match suspension is likely for being red carded, delaying confirmation of the signing until July 1 will allow Bernabei to serve that suspension in Argentina where Lanus have matches on June 26 and 30.

This morning the Glasgow Times reports:

CELTIC are set to announce the signing of Alexandro Bernabei as Ange Postecoglou steps up efforts to strengthen his squad for their tilt at the Champions League group stage.

Argentinian under-19 international left-back Bernabei arrived in Glasgow yesterday to put the finishing touches to a five-year deal after Celtic agreed a fee of £3.75m with Lanus for his transfer earlier in the week.

Herald Sport understands the 21-year-old is likely to be announced officially as a Celtic player today, while the long-awaited conclusion to the Jota transfer saga is also within sight.

NB It seems that there is some confusion between the Glasgow Times and The Herald over which publication they are in!

It is not cut and dried that suspensions are transferred but Celtic can eliminate that risk by delaying the official signing until July 1.

Otherwise there is the risk of the SFA applying a suspension which would delay Bernabei’s debut until August 13 when Celtic visit Kilmarnock, their third SPFL fixture.
