Ajax have joined the race to sign Calvin Bassey. Other than Brighton it is unclear what other clubs are interested in the Ibrox star.

Throughout May the Scottish media were in campaign mode as they compared Bassey to Virgin van Dijk with offers expected to start at £25m because that’s the fee Celtic got for Kieran Tierney.

Aston Villa were supposed to be leading the race but when they paid Sevilla £26m for Diego Carlos that trail came to a sudden halt. Similarly Villa showed no interest in Joe Aribo at just £6m.

Tuning in to TalkSport the Daily Record reports Alex Crook saying:

I know Rangers are keen to keep him for at least one more year but you have to believe the lure of playing in the Champions League and playing for an iconic club like Ajax might be too good to turn down.

The fee I’m being told is in the region of between £15m and £20m with add-ons. I know there is Premier League interest, strong interest for Brighton earlier in the window which seems to have gone quiet. It wouldn’t surprise me if Calvin Bassey was to replace Martinez at Ajax. He offers that versatility.

Having spent £4m of the Aribo transfer fee on Antonio Colak and Rabbi Matondo it looks like further sales will be required before Giovanni van Bronckhorst can sign any new players.
