Ange Postecoglou is expecting to have some new faces in the Celtic squad that faces Norwich next Saturday.

Ahead of the pre-season trip to Austria and the Czech Republic Alexandro Beranbei and Jota were added to the Celtic squad with the hoops boss pleased with the way that his squad was taking shape.

Against Blackburn today Giorgos Giakoumakis, Reo Hatate and Carl Starfelt were missing and while the starting XI remained strong the side that finished the match was noticeably weaker.

With September and October packed with midweek Champions League matches the Celtic squad could be stretched with Postecoglou flagging up in advance what his squad requires.

He told the Daily Record:

We’re definitely going to add a couple of players. We’re working hard on that and would expect to do it in the next seven days.

We’ve had to be patient, that was more important than rushing. I’m confident we’re close to the end point in bringing in a couple that will help.

The squad is looking really good but on days like today we want to make sure we don’t lose our effectiveness when a couple are missing.

The reality is that we’ll play close to 60 games this season. The Champions League on a weekly basis will add stress to the squad which is why I’m keen to get a couple more in, to make sure we’re strong and robust.

Celtic open their defence of the SPFL Premiership title at home to Aberdeen in a fortnight with a gentle programme through August without any midweek matches.

Getting his squad together before the end of July will give the players and management the ideal platform to go into the season which will stop for five weeks in November/December with the January transfer window following soon after.

You’ve got Adam Montgomery on loan to St. Johnstone until January. What he will gain as a net result of that, I am not sure! It means he will miss the Group Stages of the ECL. It would surely have been a better option, to have the Bhoy on the bench, supposing he would make the squad, which I am sure he would have been capable of as a third choice sub for left mid-defence. He’d have learned more sitting on the bench than he will playing at St. Johnstone.

After yesterday, it’s clear that while our starting eleven is starting to look OK, we still need to add quality in defence and midfield. Unfortunately, our budget restricts where we shop, so getting players that can improve the team will be difficult. Getting it right at this price point will be a challenge!
