Standard Liege’s rumoured interest in Mikey Johnston has been picked up by the Voetbal Belgie website.

The winger started just three SPFL Premiership matches last season with injury issues and the arrivals of Jota and Liel Abada reducing his opportunities under Ange Postecoglou.

It is now five years since Johnston and Tony Ralston made their debuts under Brendan Rodgers but while the full-back had his proper breakthrough season in 21/22 it was another term of frustration for the winger.

Celtic appear to be developing contacts in Belgium, especially at Mechelen and Oostende, with Ronny Deila in charge of Standard Liege Johnston could find the set up to develop his undoubted ability.

Voetbal Belgie reports:

With Noah Ohio (RB Leipzig) and Jacob Barrett Laursen (Arminia Bielefeld), Standard has two newcomers for the time being. A third would be on the way.

According to Celtic Inside, Mikey Johnston is on the wish list of the Rouches. The 23-year-old winger is a youth product of the Scottish top club. He has also made 79 appearances for the main force. In it, Johnston scored 11 goals and provided 10 assists.

It would go on a loan with purchase option. In Scotland, Johnston still has a contract until mid-2025. At the Rouches, the wing attacker has to compete with Aron Dönnum, Denis Dragus and William Balikwisha.

The report seems to be based on the tweet from Celtic Underground which suggests that there is legs in the story.

Johnston scored in Celtic’s opening pre-season friendly, against Wiener Viktoria but wasn’t included in the squad that beat Norwich City on Saturday.

If Mikey was ambitious, and at 23, he would have left before now ?

Sometimes it just doesn’t work out at a club: doesn’t make him a bad player.

    He could blossom elsewhere?

I think the boat has sailed … Never lived up to he’s potential.. some times a change of scenery needed!
