Ben Wylie has switched playing for Celtic’s B team at the Excelsior Stadium to turning out for Airdrie at that venue in League One.

The midfielder was one of Celtic’s best performers in last season’s Lowland League but along with Owen Moffat he is too old to play at that level.

At the age of 20 Wylie’s only senior experience was on loan at Ballymena United during Lockdown, moving to Airdrie gives him the opportunity to impress against clubs such as Falkirk, Dunfermline and Queen of the South.

Speaking to the Airdrie website, Wylie said:

The manager brought it across to me that they play nice football. Brody Paterson, Jon Afolabi and Kerr McInroy were all here last season and they’ve all went on to do good things off coming to Airdrie. I have a hunger to win, and I want to win every week!

It will take quite an effort for Wylie to force his way into Ange Postecoglou’s plans but establishing links with Airdrie gives Celtic’s younger players a route into the senior game.

For 16 and 17 year old players the Lowland League provides quite a contrast to Academy football but another step needs to be established before attempting the step up to Celtic’s first team squad.
