Chris Sutton fires back at claims over ‘underwhelming’ Celtic signing

Transfer

Chris Sutton has jumped to the defence of Aaron Mooy.

The midfielder joined Celtic in midweek with more suspicion than fanfare after his playing career stalled in China with his big money move coming at the same time as a pandemic and Lockdown restrictions.

After winning the SPFL title to gain direct access to the group stage of the Champions League there was an expectation that new signings would be ready-made for UEFA’s elite competition.

Mooy forged his reputation at Huddersfield Town then Brighton as an attacking midfielder in struggling teams rather than at the higher end of the EPL with European football missing from his CV.

Ange Postecoglou’s strike rate in the transfer market is almost faultless with Sutton convinced that the former Socceroos boss will get the best out of the one-time St Mirren midfielder.

In the Daily Record Sutton explains:

I’m surprised some people are underwhelmed about the arrival of Aaron Mooy. He’s not some kind of project player with potential. He’s a solid professional with a more than decent CV.

Mooy couldn’t really be classed as a defensive midfielder but he does play in a deeper role these days and I would think he’d be an ideal back up for Callum McGregor. He could even play alongside the captain in certain games, perhaps in Europe.

Supporters should get their first look at Mooy this afternoon when Celtic complete their pre-season preparations with a friendly against Norwich City.
