Celtic appear to have dropped out of contention to sign Fausto Vera with Genk reported to have made an improved offer for the midfielder.
Following the signing of Alexandro Bernabei from Lanus there was strong speculation that Vera could follow the defender to Scotland but there seems to be little substance to back that up.
If Aaron Mooy is signed as a free agent it is difficult to see any more midfielders coming in with Callum McGregor, David Turnbull, Matt O’Riley, Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and James McCarthy already at the club.
At 1.33am on Tuesday, Argentinian journalist Cesar Luis Merlo tweeted:
Genk improved the offer for Fausto Vera in terms of bonuses and forms of payment.
Corinthians hasn’t done it yet, but maintains interest in the players.
Argentinos Juniors and the soccer player have not yet made any decision.
Corinthians seem to have a strong interest in Vera but having come through the ranks at Argentinos Juniors a move to Europe would seem to be the next step rather than switching to Brazil.
Having spent around £18m so far in the transfer market with no incoming deals there is probably scope at Celtic for one more deal.
With the first competitive match of the season less than a fortnight away Ange Postecoglou will be looking to put the final touches to his squad as he aims for a settled side ahead of the opening Champions League tie in the first midweek in September.
