Mystery over the ‘disappearing’ SPFL trophy

With the new season just two weeks away Giorgos Giakoumakis is still waiting on some unfinished business from last season.

Alongside Regan Charles-Cook the Celtic striker topped the SPFL scoring charts with 13 goals last season from just 11 starts and 10 appearances off the bench.

On the final day of the season Giakoumakis watched Kyogo Furuhashi overtake him in the Celtic charts with two goals in the first half against Motherwell but came off the bench to net his own double with his second, a 90th minute scrambled affair requiring more than one touch, allowing him a share of the SPFL prize.

Except that there seems to be no prize or trophy as the Celtic striker told the Daily Record:

Where’s my trophy? Maybe they lost it, I don’t know! We will see. It suits the strikers who have better chances to score.

That’s one of my main targets this year – to score as many as possible. Why not be the top scorer in the league? Alone.

It seems that the prize or trophy is mythical, a google search fails to come up with any recent presentations, under images there is a picture of Kenny Miller as top scorer in the SPL from the 2010/11 season which was sponsored by the Clydesdale Bank.

The SPFL don’t seem to have an award although they do dish out Player of the Month and Manager of the Month awards throughout their four divisions.

Charles-Cook picked up the January Player of the Month Award but has left Ross County to join Belgian side Eupen.

It’s like the Celtic “dafabet” Man of the Match bottle of Champagne. I have watched it being awarded many times, but never actually have seen it been handed over! Maybe someone drank it!
