Peter Grant believes that it is inevitable that Chris Jullien will leave Celtic before the end of the transfer window.

With less than a year to run on his contract the defender met up with Schalke but for whatever reasons no deal was done with Jullien flying back to resume pre-season training with Celtic.

During the pre-season matches he has had a support role behind Cameron Carter-Vickers and Stephen Welsh, with Moritz Jens joining on loan from Lorient it looks like Jullien has been edged further down the pecking order from a first team place.

Picking up on Grant’s appearance on Go Radio discussing Jullien’s future, The Sun reports the former Celtic midfielder saying:

There have been questions about his effort and commitment since he’s returned but he’s been back in training with the group for a while now and Ange has probably made his mind up.

He’s probably sat Jullien down and asked what his thoughts where and that’s why we’ve probably seen the proposed move to Schalke.

I think he will have told him if you’re not going to buy into it and if you’d prefer to go then we’ll try and work it like that. I think they’ll sell him before the end of the window.

Starfelt’s injury has opened the door a little for Jullien but the combination of a year out of action, his contract and high wages all suggest to a departure next month.

Ange Postecoglou is unlikely to sanction that move until Starfelt is back in action but with Welsh and Jenz at the club it looks like Jullien is surplus to requirements.

Grant was Celtic first team coach under Tony Mowbray.
