After making his debut for Utrecht, Vasilis Barkas took to Instagram with a message that can only be aimed at his Celtic critics.

‘He never made a save’ was regularly heard about the £4m man from AEK Athens with Chris Sutton rarely missing an opportunity to highlight the failing of the goalkeeper.

Utrecht took on Queens Park at their training base with the on-loan Celt starting the match in goal. When the final scoreline of a 4-2 win for the visitors surfaced there was some predictable comments about the goalie on Twitter.

There is plenty of reasons to be critical of Barkas but yesterday wasn’t one- Utrecht changed their whole team at half time with the scores level at 1-1.

After two disastrous seasons at Celtic it is in everyone’s interest that Barkas impresses for Utrecht. A permanent move can follow, a large wage is removed and a very unfortunate chapter comes to an end.

What went on inside Celtic during the 20/21 season will never fully emerge but a combination of Lockdown, key players wanting to move on and Neil Lennon’s combustible management style wasn’t a good combination to walk into.

Barkas, Albian Ajeti, Shane Duffy, Jonjoe Kenny and Diego Laxalt all sunk into the mire, two years on the former Greek international keeper has the opportunity to revive his game.

Former Celtic youth team player Grant Savoury scored the third goal for Queens in their 4-2 win.

  • Robert Downey says:

Barkas would do well to keep his mouth shut, he couldn’t cut it playing for Celtic he clearly cannot handle the pressure, that’s why he will never make the top grade.
We really don’t need any lip from him.
