SFA put Deep Concern referee in charge of Celtic’s SPFL opener

Nick Walsh will referee Suday’s SPFL opener when Celtic host Aberdeen in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Last season, under pressure about the performances of Walsh and Bobby Madden, Celtic chairman Ian Bankier said that he had deep concerns about those referees.

Soon afterwards Walsh refereed a stormy League Cup semi final win over St Johnstone- just one month after being in charge of the same clubs in the SPFL.

Walsh’s last match involving Celtic was the 1-1 draw at Tannadice that clinched the title meaning that the Bearsden based PE teacher will take charge of two of Celtic’s last three SPFL matches. So far this season he has refereed two League Cup ties.

Ange Postecoglou will have some major decisions to make for Sunday’s match with competition for places throughout the side.

Kyogo Furuhashi and Giorgos Giakoumakis have both impressed in pre-season matches, in midfield Reo Hatate and David Turnbull have solid claims to be selected alongside Callum McGregor and Matt O’Riley. At the back Stephen Welsh looks to be Carl Starfelt’s deputy alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Frank Connor and Craig Ferfuson will be Walsh’s assistants, CLICK HERE for appointments.
