At lunchtime today Celtic announced that Callum McGregor would be unfurling the SPFL flag before Sunday’s match against Aberdeen.

After one year in the job he follows Scott Brown in that particular honour just as he inherited the armband from the now Fleetwood boss a year ago.

Over the last couple of weeks there has been a lot of speculation over the new look banners to appear around Celtic Park.

In 2015 they were greeted with approval as some of the legendary figures that have shaped the club were celebrated on the Jock Stein and Lisbon Lions Stands.

Back then McGregor was starting his second season in the first team squad. He had waited till the age of 21 for his debut in Iceland, scoring in Ronny Deila’s first match in charge.

Only James Forrest has survived from that side but as a new era opens up at Celtic Park it is fitting that the Academy bhoy who made it all the way is celebrated on the stadium.
