After one pre-season friendly Barry Ferguson can’t contain his excitement for the new season.

Despite selling two of their Europa League heroes (plus Aaron Ramsey) the former Alloa boss believes that Giovanni van Bronckhorst has put together a new look squad ready to take on the world.

Ferguson admits that it is dangerous to get carried away with pre-season results but then goes on to do just that as he drools over the performances of Antonio Colak, Rabbi Matondo and Tom Lawrence in the win over West Ham.

Conveniently overlooked is the fact that van Bronckhorst is likely to have just one fit striker available through August, will have to strike up a new central defensive partnership with Borna Barisic as the only left-back.

Spinning almost out of control, Ferguson told Daily Record readers:

Look, it’s dangerous to get carried away with pre-season friendlies or read too much into the results. But my word, was I impressed with what I saw. I did predict a week or so ago that Tom Lawrence would make a bigger impact than a lot of people might expect. Well, one goal and two assists against a top Premier League team in his first 13 minutes is not a bad start.

Lawrence looks like the real deal to me. He’s got quality on the ball, has a good finish and great awareness of what’s going on around him. I’d go as far as to say he’s like a younger, fitter version of Aaron Ramsey so I expect him to quickly become a very important player for this side.

Antonio Colak looked the part up front and didn’t give West Ham’s defence a minute’s peace. He reminded me of big Dado Prso with his workrate and attitude. Rabbi Matondo also really caught the eye after coming on at half time. The kid is absolutely rapid but he showed he has more than just raw pace. He looks to be technically excellent as well.

I also can’t wait to get a first look at Malik Tillman in the flesh because, from the clips I’ve seen of him, straight away I could see glaring similarities to Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek. So, yes, it is starting to get very exciting but there’s still six weeks of the window to go so we need to wait and see how the squad is looking when the market shuts down.

Morelos hasn’t played since March 20, in the next 18 days Van Bronckhorst’s side face Union SG twice, a trip to Livingston and a home match against Kilmarnock.

Has Barry banged his head or fell down the stairs in the close??
If not then would love to sniff, snort or gulp whatever he has on the table.

Ah wee Barry Bawbag let loose again with his CRAYONS unsupervised and Al giddy with excitement like an acne prone teenager buying and looking at his first scud book.
