Ange Postecoglou has revealed that illness forced Stephen Welsh out of the Celtic side that beat Ross County today.

With Carl Starfelt unavailable due to injury Welsh has proven himself to be a very able deputy, slotting in impressively alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers and scoring the opening goal last week against Aberdeen.

The homegrown defender had waited patiently for his chance to impress the manager but his hopes of a run in the side came to a frustrating halt today in the highlands.

Covering Postecoglou’s pre-match interview with Radio Scotland, The National reports the Celtic boss saying:

Unfortunately Stephen pulled up a bit ill after training yesterday.

Like Welsh, Moritz Jens took his opportunity to stake a claim for a regular place with a competent debut topped off by an 84th minute goal that put Celtic back in front while the homeside were threatening to take a point.

With Starfelt back on the bench today Postecoglou has the happy situation next Sunday of having three options to play alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers as Celtic take on Kilmarnock.
