BBC Scotland’s obsession with all matters Ibrox has even reached as far as promoting an obscure analytics Twitter account with just over 6,000 followers. 

If you want to find a full-back in the Slovenian Second Division that hits certain stats Patrick Caskie is your man, complete with graphs that look like images of the solar system and in-depth explanations of how X, Y or Z would fit in perfectly with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad. 

BBC Scotland’s gossip page scours old and new media for the most relevant stories in Scottish football with an 8am publication time. 

Most of their highlighted stories are fairly predictable, picking up from the back pages of the Record, Sun and Herald, going a bit regional and maybe picking up a story from abroad with some teenage starlet that is set for a dream move to Ibrox. 

Tuesday’s defeat to Union SG was a painful one for the state broadcaster who are facing up to the likelihood of faking enthusiasm for Celtic in the Champions League while filling their Thursday nights with coverage of UEFA’s poor relations tournament. 

Pouring over the aftermath of the defeat in Belgium someone at BBC Scotland decided that ‘their lowest expected goals (xG) tally in European competition’ was news worthy.
