Celtic’s decision to play in Artur Boruc’s Farewell Match last month has provided an unexpected bonus with the bhoys heading back to Poland in unfortunate circumstances for Champions League business.

All Ukraine international fixtures have had to be moved across the border into Poland with Celtic’s match away to Shakhtar Donetsk going ahead at Legia’s Stadion Wojska Polskiego.

The stakes weren’t as high in Boruc’s match but having already travelled to Warsaw and played in the Legia Satadium some of the mystery will be taken out of the fixture.

Announcing the venue switch in July, Euro Weekly News stated:

Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk football club will be playing their home matches during the group stages of the  UEFA Champions League group stage at the Stadion Wojska Polskiego in Warsaw, Poland.

Ukraine’s Shakhtar football club have signed a stadium lease agreement with Poland’s Legia Warsaw for the UEFA Champions League group stage matches.

According to the club agreement, those having a season pass for Legia’s matches in the 2022/23 season, will be able to exercise their priority right to purchases tickets for the Champions League fixtures.

The return to Warsaw will be welcomed by Josip Juranovic who spent a season playing for Legia before his £2.5m transfer to Celtic 12 months ago.

UEFA are currently working away on the fixtures while will be played between September 6 and November 2 with the knock-out qualifiers decided before the season comes to a halt for the World Cup Finals in Qatar.
