Kris Boyd isn’t entertaining the notion that Jota is the best player in Scotland- but he won’t go public with who he thinks does deserve that title.

On loan from Benfica last season the winger lit up Scottish football with a string of goals and assists as Celtic came from six points behind to win the title. With Jota in the line-up Celtic only lost once in the SPFL.

Celtic agreed a £6m deal with Benfica during the summer to make the move permanent with Jota starting the season on fire.

Last Sunday against Aberdeen he scored a wonder goal from 25 yards that was almost played on a loop for 24 hours by Sky Sports News, yesterday at Ross County he provided three assists as Celtic made it two wins out of two to start the new campaign.

Jota’s form caught the attention and acclaim of Scott Allan but during on Sky Sports before the Hibs v Heats match Boyd seemed very reluctant to talk up a special talent in the Scottish game.

Covering the studio discussion, The Sun reports:

Allan said on Sky Sports: “For me, he’s the best player in the league. His numbers last season were incredible. He’s the player you get the ball to, his numbers last season were incredible.

“You know something’s going to happen, he’s got that thing the Celtic fans love, that bit of arrogance on the ball. He’s a player that’s only going to get better. If he keeps developing, then he’ll end up at one of the big teams across Europe.”

SunSport columnist Boyd, however, didn’t exactly agree!

He didn’t name who he thinks is the Premiership’s best player – but did offer a rather not-so-subtle hint as to who he had in mind!

Responding to Allan, Boyd said: “Jota the best player in the league? I’m not too sure about that. However, we’ll move on.”

Eilidh Barbour then asked: “Who would you go for?”

After initially replying “I’ve not got time to think about that,” Boyd quickly added: “Let’s just say he came back and scored yesterday.”

Next week Boyd will be able to watch Jota close up when Celtic visit Kilmarnock with Sky Sports showing the match live from Rugby Park.
