Allan McGregor is using his pundit pals to undermine new Ibrox number 1 Jon McLaughlin.

The veteran keeper signed a new 12 month contract at the end of last season but has been left on the bench for the first two matches of the season.

McLaughlin was caught in no-mans land on Saturday as Livingston scored a fifth minute opener and has been under fire for the first goal from Union SG when a shot from Teddy Teuma flew in close to his body.

Apparently Greegsy would never have lost either goal with Barry Ferguson explaining to Daily Record readers why his old pal should still be playing.

Gio made a big decision by going with McLaughlin in goal and I’m sure the big man is still kicking himself this morning for not saving Union’s opening goal.

He simply HAD to keep that one out because Allan McGregor almost certainly would have. I like McLaughlin. Is he one of the top keepers in Scotland? Maybe.

But the guy sitting on the bench last night is still the best in the country so that’s a difficult decision to understand in itself. McLaughlin wasn’t the only one to blame as Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic and James Sands were all found wanting in the build-up.

Van Bronckhorst faces a very difficult couple of days with media outlets struggling to deflect from Tuesday’s defeat and the consequences of an early Champions League exit.

Reaching the Play Off stage guarantees a £5m payment from UEFA and the chance to fleece MyGers members for a game against PSV Eindhoven or Monaco.

Failure next week and it is straight into the Europa League group stage and six Sunday matches between the start of September and the first week in November.
