Terry Butcher issues brutal warning to the Europa League losers

Terry Butcher has slammed Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Champions League flops. 

Since Tuesday night’s 2-0 defeat to Union SG in Belgium it has been open season on the SPFL runners up as they stare at an early exit from the elite UEFA competition. 

Mark Hateley branded Antonio Colak as a waste of space after the former PAOK man put in an invisible shift against the Belgians. 

Butcher spent a couple of years at Ibrox in the eighties, scoring two memorable goals for Celtic in the Glasgow derby and issued a blunt warning to van Bronckhorst’s squad less than three months after they reached the final of the Europa League. 

Speaking to The Sun the former England skipper said: 

In football, you don’t get the time to sit back, admire the view and think, ‘We’re a bloody good side’, as there’s always someone there waiting to knock you down. 

Rangers did really well to reach the final last season, but I know from personal experience how that can affect your mentality as a player. 

In my first season at Ibrox we won the championship and the League Cup, and I was expecting that to be the case every year. 

But we had a rude awakening when we ended up losing the league the next term, although me breaking my leg didn’t really help matters! Sometimes players need to look in the mirror and give themselves a slap in the face. That result on Tuesday was a slap all right. 

Those lads will be gutted, but they are lucky they have the chance to put things right next week. 

On Saturday the Champions League flops can take their anger out on Kilmarnock with Derek McInnes taking his side to Ibrox.
