In their now traditional style the club from Ibrox have announced that James Tavernier has signed an undisclosed contract for a significant period of time.

Already under contract until 2024 the former Wigan Athletic and MK Dons utility man was rolled out on his new deal in the aftermath of the draw against PSV Eindhoven that sees the Champions League group stage slip further away.

Since moving to Ibrox at the start of the Warburton Revolution in 2015 Tav has looked on across the city as Celtic have picked up 15 out of 21 domestic trophies. Tav has won two trophies, as have St Johnstone with Ross County and Hibs the other winners.

The comparisons with John Greig who was captain during Celtic’s first 9-in-a-row are obvious.

In the 2019/20 season Tav’s leadership qualities were put in the spotlight. At Hampden in the League Cup Final, trailing to a goal from Chris Jullien, Willie Collum awarded a penalty and sent off Jeremy Frimpong.

Tav grabbed the ball, handed it to Alfredo Morelos whose penalty was saved by Fraser Forster with the Colombian not taking a penalty since that day at Hampden. At the final whistle the skipper consoled Ryan Jack on the pitch.

Two months later after losing to Hearts in the Scottish Cup Tav used his column in the club programme to explain why he and his team-mates couldn’t cope with pressure. Hamilton Accies won that match at Ibrox.
