Despite the outrage from Ibrox over last night’s result Giovanni van Bronckhorst was simply following in the footsteps of previous managers in UEFA’s leading competition.

Across both clubs spanning the best part of two decades playing in the Champions League has turned out to be something of a nightmare for Walter Smith, Ally McCoist and Steven Gerrard. Those three legends have managed to muster up just one win in 15 years!

Malmo has been a repeated problem with Union SG joining giants like Kaunus and Unirea Urziceni in an unwanted Roll of Honour.

History suggests that turning around a 2-0 defeat next week is too big an ask. Last season Steven Gerrard’s side trailed 2-0 in the first leg before Steve Davis scored a late goal in Malmo.

Alfredo Moreos levelled the tie in the first half at Ibrox but despite being down to 10 men Antonio Colak scored a double to accelerate Mister Gerrard’s departure for Aston Villa in November.
