Why didn’t the Colak Rule apply to Giakoumakis and Bassey?

Over the weekend many cases were put forward to justify Willie Collum’s decision to award a penalty against Hibs as Antonio Colak fell dramatically to the deck. Kenny Miller is a media favourite.

Without doubt there was contact from Rocky Bushiri, football is a contact sport with players jostling at every corner and free-kick.

The Hibs defender was stupid but perhaps he had been reassured by an incident earlier when James Tavernier wrestled him to the ground in full view of Collum with no penalty awarded.

This time Collum had his radar switched on, the opportunity for attention as he pointed to the penalty spot knowing his decision making would dominate the half time discussions and analysis.

Back in February there was a more clear cut penalty decision that Bobby Madden didn’t award.

With Celtic in full flow the roof was caving in on the Ibrox defenders, Madden was as panic struck as Borna Barisic. When Reo Hatate opened the scoring the referee tried frantically to find a reason to disallow but had to go with the inevitable.

Ten minutes from the break Giorgos Giakoumakis looked to control a cross on his chest, behind him Calvin Bassey had two arms round his opponent and continued his run to send the Celtic player sprawling. Madden didn’t want to know.

Bassey was involved in a similar incident a week earlier against Livingston that went unpunished. Last season he wasn’t sent off in any Scottish matches, 10 minutes into his debut for Ajax he was sent off.

Don Robertson missed the incident above.

If I was refereeing those games then I would have given a penalty,,,,,possibly two!

Something similar Aribo booked for diving in box with new club would have been a certain penalty while playing at Ibrox.

The words” Bobby Madden didnt give” have never been more appropriate right now ,after the weekend of forensic refereeing scrutiny! Yet if we had a system where officials could be questioned about contentious decisions they made after all games, it might just help out a bit. By the way, Billy Leckie in the Sun yesterday brought religion and refereeing into the same topic. Now we know. If in doubt, blame the guy’s background ! I really am disgusted with the SMSM and others at times in this blinkered city.
