Ally McCoist turned his Champions League frustrations on Giovanni van Bronckhorst last night as he co-commentated on the 2-2 draw with PSV Eindhoven.

As usual in these situations whoever isn’t playing is elevated to star man status with Leon Balogun getting that treatment last night.

A new four year contract for Connor Goldson and the arrival of John Sick-Note Souttar meant the end of the road for Balogun in May, last week when Union SG were beaten 3-0 there wasn’t any mention of Nigerian international defender.

With Goldson ducking out of headers last night and James Sands unconvincing at the back Captain Hindsight McCoist got the drum out to big up free agent Balogun.

Picking up on his comments on BT Sport last night, the Daily Record reports McCoist saying:

I mentioned that before the first goal, Rangers looked small. PSV looked big, and I thought set plays were going to be important. Sands isn’t a natural centre-back, would Balogun have made a difference?

He’s sitting up in the stands watching Rangers on Saturday, I’m not sure I would have let him go. Souttar has injuries, you know, Helander, obviously.

Perhaps there is (a case to bring Balogun back), it’s not hindsight, I was surprised to see him go, I really was. I tell you what, we could have done with him tonight. He’s got height, he’s got a presence, and scored goals in Europe

It seems that Coisty has forgotten all about former Liverpool star Ben Davies, the defender that never got near a game at Anfield but saw his value soar from £500,000 to £4m over 18 months.

Defeat in Eindhoven next week could make the last few days of August very busy for transfer guru Ross Wilson.
