Celtic defender set to get big international opportunity

Greg Taylor is in line for a place in the Scotland side to cap his impressive start to the season.

Andy Robertson has withdrawn from Steve Clarke’s squad for the matches against Ukraine home and away either side of a Hampden clash against Ireland.

Taylor has had the often thankless task of being understudy to the national captain with Kieran Tierney the back-up even though the Arsenal man usually plays on the left of a back three for Scotland.

Brentford’s Aaron Hickey is the other left-back option available to Clarke.

The former Kilmarnock man has started all but one of Celtic’s matches this season, setting a high benchmark for summer recruit Alexandro Bernabei.

Taylor has picked up seven full caps since making his debut away to Belgium in June 2019, shortly before his move to Celtic.

While most countries have two matches coming up Scotland have an additional game, away to Ukraine on September 27 with Celtic hosting Motherwell on October 1 to kick off a hectic schedule of club fixtures ahead of the international break.
