Watching a performance like Wednesday’s against Shakhtar Donetsk it is easy to forget the inexperience in the Celtic squad.

Only Joe Hart and Callum McGregor had really experienced the competition before, Giorgos Giakoumakis had a couple of appearances here and there in 2018/19 for AEK Athens in a season that Celtic fans would rather forget.

At the age of 27 the match away to Shakhtar was Kyogo Furuhashi’s first ever start in club football’s elite competition.

The Japanese striker was one of two changes that Ange Postecoglou made to the starting line up that faced Real Madrid the previous week.

It could have been a dream start for the former Vissel Kobe striker when he was put through on goal in the first minute but the boot of Anatolli Trubin denied him a goal.

When team-mate Reo Hatate sent the ball goalwards in the 10th minute Kyogo resisted the temptation to put a toe on the ball as it headed goalwards then almost panicked Trubin into a goal-line howler but the keeper just managed to clear the ball.

October 5 in Leipzig will be Kyogo’s chance to add a Champions League goal to his collection, on Sunday at St Mirren he’ll be looking to cause further domestic damage after his involvement in the Glasgow derby ended in the first minute.
