At 10.30pm last night the Daily Record were telling their dwindling army of readers that Tuesday’s Champions League tie could be switched from Ibrox to Napoli.

The report was of course complete nonsense, there was never a chance of that happening but that was the tale that their elderly readers were handing money over to read this morning.

By mid afternoon on Saturday even the Record had killed the story, or their own exclusive.

UEFA took the best part of 40 hours to come up with their fixture schedule, it is co-ordinated with broadcasters who then arrange their resources to ensure that every country gets the maximum number of broadcasting minutes.

Schedules are drawn up, everything runs like a military exercise.

Because a 10-year-old club with a completely fictitious sense of their own importance fears an absolute leathering isn’t reason to tear up plans, reverse fixtures and disturb the plans of thousands.

Sponsors are expecting to be wined and dined at Ibrox on Tuesday, that is why they pay UEFA huge money. Billboards on television screens and backslapping in the hospitality suites.

If a club is overcome by fake grief they can concede the match 3-0, hand back one sixth of their participation fees and take a fine from UEFA. That should stem their whimpering petted lip and ensure that Tav & Co get to test themselves against the players that have just hammered Liverpool 4-1.
