Ten months into his reign as manager of Aston Villa the English media are starting to realise that Steven Gerrard is just another top name player that can’t cut it in management.

One trophy in nine was nothing to write home about but with former team-mates scattered through the media Villa were persuaded that the sulky Scouser was the next big thing in management.

Such was the hype around his appointment that the biggest issue seemed to be how long he’d be at Villa before the inevitable call came from Anfield to take over from Jurgen Klopp.

After the expected new manager bounce, Dean Smith was sacked on the back of five successive defeats, reality kicked in as Gerrard’s limited ability was exposed.

There was no outstanding result, the season fizzled with a 3-2 defeat away to Manchester City after going into a 2-0 lead. Another title slipped away from Liverpool.

As soon as the transfer window opened Philippe Coutinho and Diego Carlos were sold with not much change left out of £50m.

The new season has started as the previous one finished with just a home win over Everton on the board. Defeats to Bournemouth and Crystal Palace point towards a long struggle ahead- losing by more than three goals at home to Manchester City on Saturday could see Gerrard’s time in charge brought to a sudden halt.
