Before the defeat from Napoli Kris Boyd declared that Giovanni van Bronckhorst was manager in name only.

It was unusual for the former Portland Timbers goal-ace to be writing for The Sun in midweek, this morning he has followed it up by claiming that the side selected to play Napoli was actually Steven Gerrard’s. The one hit wonder quit Ibrox 10 months ago to escape the scrutiny as his team went into reverse gear.

Boyd can almost always be guaranteed to give his backing to anyone on the Ibrox payroll but for some reason he has a massive downer on Van Bronckhorst. For someone that thinks that Alfredo Morelos is the best player in Scotland it is a strange stance to take.

Writing in The Sun, Boyd claims:

THE Uefa teamsheet for Rangers’ defeat to Napoli listed Gio van Bronckhorst as manager.

In reality, it could have said Steven Gerrard. After all, it was basically his 2018/19 Rangers team who faced the Italians.

The absence of new faces jumped out when the starting XI for the Napoli game was revealed. Where were all the summer signings? In fact, where were all the signings from the past SIX windows?

Wednesday night’s side was a damning indictment on the club’s recent recruitment. And everyone to a man was saying it when that line-up landed — not just me.

Rangers can try to deny there’s a recruitment issue but the evidence is there in black and white, looking at the last three years.

Since Ross Wilson, far right, arrived as sporting director in October 2019, the club have signed 25 first-team players.

Only TWO of them — James Sands and John Lundstram — started against Napoli.

Boyd concludes with:

In attack and all over the pitch, Rangers have failed miserably to bring in fresh quality over the last few years. The fans deserve answers — but the silence is deafening from the club.

Transfer guru Wilson seems to be getting dragged into the firing line as panic meets reality at Ibrox. The wee man from Falkirk build up his image from afar with no-one looking closely at his work with Southampton.

In three transfer windows for an outlay of around £20m Ange Postecoglou has built up a far stronger squad at Celtic without the expense of a Director of Football/Transfer Guru.

After the freakish success of the Lockdown Season Boyd and others see a full-on return to The Banter Years with Celtic going further in front. It is a miserable thought for the Brains of Sky Sports in Scotland with Everyone, Anyone in the firing line for the problems that are growing at Ibrox.

Of the team that started against Napoli Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Jack are free to sign pre-contracts elsewhere in January with the World Cup break the time for agents to get to work on moves elsewhere.
