After his nightmare start at Ibrox, Ridvan Yilmaz was probably hoping for a boost away on international duty to help his bid to oust Borna Barisic from Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side.

The left-back was signed from Besiktas as part of the Player Trading Model and was expected to step straight into the Ibrox side.

One SPFL start at home to St Johnstone and a League Cup appearance against Queen of the South have been the only times that fans have seen the slightly built left-back in action with zero minutes from four European ties.

Turkey had Nations League ties against the Faroe Isles and Luxembourg over the last couple of days but like Van Bronckhorst the Turkey boss, Stefan Kuntz chose to leave Yilmaz sitting on the bench.

The Sun reports:

Yilmaz was called up to the Turkey squad for the latest round of fixtures but remained on the bench for both of their games.

The Turks drew 3-3 with Luxembourg and followed that poor result up with an even more disastrous 2-1 loss against the Faroe Islands in their final Nations League match.

Turkish TV analysts began laying into national team boss Stefan Kuntz for his squad selection and Rangers £5million summer signing was singled out as a questionable pick, given his lack of game time for his new club. The 21-year-old was described as being “carried like a bag” by pundits on TRT Sport.

With away trips to Hearts and Liverpool coming up on October 1 and 4 it seems unlikely that Yilmaz will be back in action anytime soon.

One piece of good news for van Bronckhorst is that John Souttar is expected to start light training in the next 7-10 days.
