No fight, desire, spirit, pride- Barry Ferguson Bingo as livid Daily Record columnist goes tonto

Despite yesterday’s events Barry Ferguson has used his Daily Record column for further self promotion and an attack on Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad.

After every set-back or poor result you can set your watch on a trademark opinion piece appearing in the Glasgow based publisher.

While criticising modern day players Ferguson has to remind readers that he was the pure ultimate Rangers man, even when he left for Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham. Even when he lost 5-1 to Celtic then followed that up with a red card in a 6-2 defeat followed by a trip to the Bothwell Castle Hotel.

Watching van Bronckhorst’s side get hammered by Celtic and Ajax saw Ferguson reach for a familiar template. Explaining how committed and angry he was at the lack of fight/desire/spirit shown and how it would have been very different in his day because he was a true blue real Rangers man.

After a bad defeat in his day the players would sort things out privately among themselves, harsh words, home truths and even raised fists would be involved. After that they’d go out and battle for each other, delivering incredible success for the glory of the blue jersey, certainly not for the bonus going into an offshore account out of reach for Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.

In today’s offering to console grieving bears, Ferguson tells the Daily Record:

There are certain things that simply aren’t acceptable for any Rangers player. Losing 4-0 twice in the space of five days is certainly one of them. But it wasn’t even the eight goals conceded against Celtic and Ajax which ought to be hurting them right now.

Because what can never be tolerated at my old club is the manner in which they have surrendered and capitulated in two of the biggest games they could possibly be asked to play. Fight. Desire. Spirit. Professional pride. A bit of anger.

I didn’t see any of it in these two defeats and that must have been the biggest concern of all for Giovanni van Bronckhorst as he sat on the plane back from Amsterdam on Wednesday night. People used to say I was a right moany b****** as a player and I can’t argue with that. I might not have been the best player in the world but I was a multi-tasker – I could bark at people at the same time as I was passing the ball to them – and I’m sure my old team mates were sick of the sight of my angry wee face.

But I’ll tell you this much, if you ask any one of them they’ll tell you I kept them on their toes. I kept them alert. I demanded more from them when we were up against a wall.

And I probably did more shouting at my own TV on Wednesday night than I saw going on out there on the pitch. The more angry I got, the more lethargic and passive they seemed to become.

Last season Ferguson had a brief spell managing Alloa Athletic, winning 10 out of 34 matches before being mutually consented.

  • Tam says:

His column is supposed to be his take on “Scottish football” as a whole NOT just “the rangers”. McCoist and the Ayrshire clown are both ex forwards but instead of talking about exceptional forward Play “goals” when the rangers get beat they talk about the defense….. they’re only there to give their “expert”opinion as strikers NOT to lament another “the rangers” defeat
