Sky Sports could switch their microphones off at tomorrow’s match between St Mirren and Celtic.

The fall out to two banners displayed against Shakhtar Donetsk in midweek has sparked a wave of criticism from folk like Jeremy Kyle, Simon Jordan and James Whale.

A minute of applause will be held before Sunday’s noon kick-off but according to the Daily Mail Sky Sports have been briefed over how they should handle any possible disruption:

Sky Sports’ production staff have been instructed to turn down sound levels or even switch off individual microphones during their live coverage of Celtic’s Scottish Premiership trip to St Mirren on Sunday if away fans sing offensive chants about the Queen.

BT Sport were forced to apologise after their camera crews honed in on an offensive banner during Celtic’s Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday and Sky staff have been primed to avoid a repeat.

All broadcasters are bound by Ofcom regulations which state they should avoid televising any material that could cause offence to viewers, and the regulator is understood to have provided further guidance this week that insulting material about the Queen falls into that category.

Last weekend all football fixtures in Scotland and England were cancelled while Test Cricket, golf and Rugby League continued with their fixtures and events.

This weekend there will be a variety of tributes paid to the late monarch as football returns although the matches between Chelsea v Liverpool and Manchester United v Spurs have been postponed due to policing issues.

On Wednesday Scotland host Ukraine in a Nations League qualifier with the SFA expected to pay tribute at that match with Steve Clarke’s side unlikely to train on Monday, the day of the funeral.

So, if I am offended by God Save whomever, then it should be cancelled out? Or is it only if it offensive to arsehole monarchists?

  • Fair Play says:

“up to your knees in Fenian blood “etc to get the same treatment?

  • KC67 says:

State sponsored censorship and a week of forced “mourning”. Subservient and obedient, just the way the tories like it.

  • Seppington says:

The hypocritical bassas don’t care that “God save the Queen” is horribly offensive to athiest republicans….

  • himuptheroad says:

They’ve been doing this for years at the bigotdome. Every time they start with their hate filled songs the pitch side microphones are noticeably muted. The oppposite is true when Celtic fans sing about the IRA etc. Times have moved on hugely and I would rather our support refrained from anything controversial, especially when it comes to giving our enemies a stick to beat us with, but I think it is wrong that they are doing this. It is selective censorship and can be used to suit people with an agenda.

  • Scud Missile says:

You could not make it up are these PEOPLE for real.
Sevco fans week in week out sing sectarian songs and racist songs blasted out across the airwaves through radio and TV stations with the volume never turned down or muted once.Talk about DOUBLE STANDARDS.

  • Sean McGinley says:

So, in the backwater bigoted, shithole, free speech means censorship mmmm..
They have done this to Celtic frequently, especially at away games, because they don’t like the continuous volume throughout the match that their enemies receive. Nothing new here to read about.

  • Michael Conway says:

Remind me,did Simon Jordan,Jeremy Kyle,James whale & farage ever denounce oldco for stiffing an old lady out of millions,I can’t really recall if thet did or didnt

  • the maister says:

They could clap for a minute and sing “The Boys of the Old Brigade” at the same time, since the late old yin apologised for what England did to the Easter-time Irish Rebels in 1916! I think she would approve!
