UEFA draw the line over Warsaw silence

There will be no minutes silence in Warsaw tonight ahead of Celtic’s Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk.

With thousands of Ukrainians killed since the Russian invasion and millions forced to leave their country it would be in poor taste if everyone involved in the match had to pay extra respect to a 96-year-old woman.

Throughout the UK there have been a number of events staged to mark the death and celebrate the life of Queen Elizabeth but it seems that football is often expected to react at different levels to everyone else.

All Scottish senior football matches were postponed at the weekend as a mark of respect to the deceased monarch. Meanwhile across England Test Cricket continued, as did professional golf and Rugby League.

Rather than be sidetracked by other issues Ange Postecoglou and his coaching staff are giving the match against Shakhtar Donetsk their full concentration knowing that a win against a team playing o neutral territory would set them up with a fighting chance of progressing to the knock out stage of the competition.

Whilst I prefer to keep politics out of football, including anthems, displays and tributes, it ought to be said that those that make the laws should abide by them. Catholics and Republics are barred from Westminster (without the oath) and the monarchy. This is basic racism that a shopkeeper would not be allowed to do. To peacefully protest in public on this issue is to stand against immorality and illegality. Police making arrests against such protests are actually the ones breaking the law, as are their overlords.

Common sense prevails with this announcement.

Bill Leckie already had the ‘ Atrocious ‘ or ‘ Scum ‘ headline written out
