Alex Rae fears the consequences for Gio of another Champions League hammering

Alex Rae has warned Giovanni van Bronckhorst that he can;t afford another 7-1 hammering tomorrow from Napoli.

The Dutchman is coming under increasing criticsm with Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Livingston greeted with booing from the fans that opted to stick it out until the final whistle.

The joy of reaching the group stage of the Champions League has been replaced by anger and frustration as the limitations of the squad has been laid bare on the international stage.

While the results have been grim the manner that the team has played has prompted pundits and fans to conclude that the team had chucked it.

When the players check out on the park the next step is almost always a change n management.

The Daily Record reports Rae saying:

They’ll be feeling a sigh of relief after negotiating through the win against Dundee in the cup because they weren’t great on the night. Everyone at Rangers wants a bit more pace in their play because at the moment it’s very ponderous.

Their performances have been flat lately and that will be a concern for Giovanni van Bronckhorst as they’ve got a tough run of fixtures coming up. They’ve got Napoli on Wednesday and they need to really perform well to get a result against them – they can’t afford another heavy defeat after that performance against Liverpool.

Rae is currently assistant manager to Paul Ince at Reading.
