A dressing room containing Andy Ritchie and Efe Ambrose would probably give most footbal managers a nightmare.

A time difference of around 30 years prevented it happening but last night one Morton legend gave his approval for the debut of a defender who can best be described as maverick.

For 89 minutes Ambrose could look the best defender in the world but then for one moment something bizarre would happen to leave supporters shaking their heads.

After leaving Celtic the Nigerian defender went to Hibs, was signed by Frank Lampard for Derby, never played a game and has turned out for Livingston, St Johnstone, Dunfermline and now Morton in a mini-Scottish tour.

At the age of 34 there is surely a few more seasons in his legs with last night’s 4-0 win over Inverness lifting Morton into joint top place in the Championship, bhind leaders Ayr United on goal difference.
