Old man McGregor adds to Gio’s problems as he gives away a howler at Motherwell

Giovanni van Bronckhorst got out of Fir Park with three points this afternoon but a 2-1 win over Motherwell does little for his long term job prospects.

After being hammered 7-1 by Liverpool in midweek the goodwill pot from reaching the final of the Europa League has run dry with one more heavy loss likely to prove fatal for the Dutchman.

On October 26 he takes his side to face free scoring Napoli.

Today Ben Davies and Leon King formed an unsteady central defensive partnership but the bigger issue was behind them in Allan McGregor.

Soon after going 2-0 in front thanks to a dubious goal off an uncertain part of John Lundstram’s body Motherwell were awarded a free-kick wide on the left hand side.

It was the sort of set-piece that goalkeepers and defenders prepare for all week but with one nervous step forward old man Greegsy was hopelessly out of position with the ball from Stuart McKinstry flying over him into the net. Had he stood his ground a step back would have given him a bread and butter catch.

After losing 12 goals in 3 Champions League ties it looks like the 40-year-old has lost his touch, which isn’t the best situation for a fragile looking defence to work with.
