Don Robertson will referee next week’s League Cup tie between Motherwell and Celtic.

Last season the SFA twice had to apply retrospective red cards for opponents following matches against Celtic but that doesn’t seem to be hindering the career of the 35-year-old.

Robertson refereed Celtic’s win away to Ross County in the SPFL then took charge of the bruising SPFL defeat away to St Mirren last month.

Celtic have won the League Cup in five of the last six seasons, in December a double from Kyogo Furuhashi against Hibs delivered Ange Postecoglou his first trophy as Celtic manager.

The trip to Fir Park splits up four midweek Champions League ties for Celtic with Postecoglou likely to use the cup tie to give players like Joe Hart a breather.

Next week’s match kicks off at 6.15 to allow Premier Sports to screen a double header with the semi-finals and final of the competition pushed back into the new year due to the World Cup break.
