SFA put ‘elite’ referee in charge of St Johnstone v Celtic

Kevin Clancy will referee Celtic for the second time this season when he takes charge of Saturday’s trip to St Johnstone in the SPFL.

The Glasgow based referee seemed to upset Hearts boss Robbie Neilson earlier in the season with two late red cards as he watched his side lose 2-0 against the champions.

With Bobby Madden out of the picture Clancy, Nick Walsh and Don Robertson will each have refereed two of Celtic’s first nine matches, indicating the lack of depth in the current refereeing pool. Clancy has also refereed two matches at Ibrox this season.

Last season Celtic dropped points in nine fixtures, Clancy was in charge for the away defeat at Ibrox in August, the home draw with Dundee United the following month and the away draw against Hibs in February.

Saturday’s 12.30 kick off at McDiarmid Park gives Celtic the chance to restore a five point lead for a couple of hours, last season in their only visit to St Johnstone they won 3-1 in a festive fixture played in front of just 500 supporters.
