Among the many problems facing Giovanni van Bronckhorst there appears to be a serious lack of internal discipline among the players.

On the hour mark last night, trailing only 2-1, Ryan Jack looked around and decided to sit down, rubbing a mystery leg injury. At virtually the same time Connor Goldson appeared trackside on crutches.

What happened next wasn’t covered by the BT Sport cameras but followed closely by fans at the match.

It took the best part of five minutes, or just less than a Mo Salah hat-trick to get Steve Davis on for Jack. Liverpool never scored during that period but when supporters can see a player openly criticise his manager it looks like the problems at the club run much deeper than running up a record defeat.

Under Steve Gerrard it looked like Lundstram would be heading back to England at the first opportunity.

With Davis and Glen Kamara eased aside in February van Bronckhorst suddenly made the former Sheffield United star the key player in his midfield.
